"Seriously entertaining!"

When life hands you dementia, sometimes all you can do is laugh.

Did Mom Drop Acid? is a raw, hilarious, and heart-wrenching memoir that takes you on the wild ride of one woman's reluctant journey into caregiving for her mother, who’s battling dementia with more than a little flair.

This is not your typical caregiving story. It's a rollercoaster of absurd moments, unexpected humor, and poignant reflections that will have you laughing through your tears. From the bizarre to the beautiful, every page offers a glimpse into the chaotic reality of loving someone who’s slowly fading away, yet somehow more vibrant than ever.

Perfect for anyone who’s ever found themselves in the challenging role of caregiver, or for those who simply enjoy a good laugh in the face of life’s most unpredictable twists, Did Mom Drop Acid? is a testament to the power of humor, resilience, and the complicated, unbreakable bonds of family.

Get to know Michelle Cain.

Hello!

I'm Michelle, the owner of Bird House Publications and the author of our first book. I wrote this book about my mom’s journey with dementia—a time in my life that was incredibly tough but also filled with moments of humor and absurdity that helped me through. These true stories are what inspired me to start Bird House Publications.

I believe in the power of connection through sharing our stories, and I’m excited to bring more of them to life.

“You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better.”

POLARIS

FINDS HIS FAMILY

Discover the World Through Polaris’ Eyes—Even If He Can’t See or Hear It

Meet Polaris, a real puppy with an extraordinary way of experiencing the world. Born blind and deaf, Polaris navigates life without sight or sound, yet somehow, he becomes a guide for those around him, teaching everyone he meets a different way to perceive the beauty in the world.

Named after the North Star in the constellation Ursa Minor, Polaris embarks on a heartwarming journey in search of a family to call his own. Along the way, he encounters Bea, his guardian angel in the form of a bumblebee, and two quirky bird friends, Flick the Northern Flicker and Tiny the Nuthatch, who never stray far from his side. But what makes Polaris truly special?

Polaris’ world is a symphony of scents, textures, and tastes. Imagine experiencing a flower the way Polaris does—smelling its musky sweet aroma, feeling the softness of its petals, and tasting its delicate sweetness on your tongue. Though his world is dark and silent, it is anything but empty. With every step, Polaris paints the colors of the night in his mind, feeling warmth, electricity, and the spark of life all around him.

This heartwarming tale invites children to explore their senses in a whole new way. Through “PAWS To Think” questions scattered throughout the story, young readers are encouraged to pause and reflect on how they experience the world, just like Polaris.

Polaris’ journey is more than just a search for a family; it’s a celebration of the limitless possibilities that come from seeing the world differently. Curiosity, resilience, and a boundless spirit guide this little puppy—and by the end, you might just find that he’s guided you too.

Perspective is EVERYTHING. How do you see the world? Join Polaris and discover a whole new way of understanding the beauty around you.

About BP

Hatched from our first book, Did Mom Drop Acid? Bird House Publishing was founded to act as a nest for books that tell ordinary people’s extraordinary stories.

Birds of a feather flock together. It's our belief, at Bird House Publishing, that humanity is our flock and that when people are stripped down to their real authentic selves, true connection happens.

Just like stories passed down from one generation to another, we hope that the extraordinary lives of ordinary people are passed from one person to another, to another…giving others the strength to be real. Contact us: michellecain4242@gmail.com

True Stories

Nigel up close_edited_edited.jpg

This guy is so relatable...

Meet Nigel

Barely a foot tall and eleven years old, Nigel’s African Gray personality fills a room. He’s bossy, just ask the two terriers that he bosses throughout the day.

He’s funny, making Star Wars laser sounds as his dad, Travis, walks through the room. He’s serious when it's bedtime telling Michelle “Good night, Nigel” first in a cute coy voice then more sternly when Michelle doesn’t react right away.

He’s dramatic, saying “O’ my god” with the inflection of a teenage girl whenever Michelle is telling Travis a story in the kitchen.

He’s moody, listening to Taylor Swift on days he wants to be left alone.

He's smart, using words and phrases in the appropriate context, sometimes sounding like a stalker when he asks Michelle “Where have you been?” as she comes through the door.

He enjoys waking up to a hard-boiled egg, fruit and veggies with toast while listening to show tunes and Flo Rida.  Depending on the Flo Rida song, he sometimes has to stop eating to dance.

I'm mean, don't we all have to stop and dance sometimes?

"Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can't remember who we are or why we're here."
